Different types of feed for different purposes
Lucerne hay is the variety loved by most horse owners, it’s high in protein and is a cool safe energy.
Wheaten hay has a lower protein content than lucerne with less minerals and vitamins. This hay is usually fed more to fatten cattle, but can be used by stabled horses to add bulk to the diet as hay or chaff.
Oaten hay, like wheaten hay has a lower protein content than lucerne, but it has a good level of vitamins and minerals. If fed to horses and cattle for the first time, they may play with it a little bit, but once they get the taste they can’t get enough. This is a great feed as a hay or chaff to add bulk and minerals to the diet. This is a good feed to add to a diet when animals are getting too much wet green feed and may be getting scours.

The type of feed you offer your animals should reflect both the current conditions in their paddock and the goal you have for the animal (eg fattening cattle, quiet calm horse etc)
